Meet Farmers: Luke & Catarina Mahoney
For 14 years, Catarina and Luke have been learning and practicing organic and biodynamic farming on a variety of farms in Germany, Russia and the USA.
In January 2007, the Mahoney family moved with their two sons to Brookford Farm in Rollinsford, New Hampshire. With access to 200 acres of grass and their prior experience, they knew that dairy was exactly where they wanted to begin. Early on, they shipped milk to Organic Valley and sold a small amount of raw milk and cream on the side. Noticing a local demand for good food, the Mahoneys also began producing pastured meats, eggs and vegetables.
The Mahoneys found a permanent home for their farm in Canterbury, New Hampshire. In 2012, Brookford Farm moved its entire operation and staff to the new 613-acre site.
All of the milk cows produce is handled in the on-site creamery. Much of it is bottled raw in glass half gallons and quarts, but they also make a wide variety of cultured products such as cheese, yogurt and cultured butter.
Cows & Diet
The cows are the heart of the farm! Brookford’s milking herd includes about 70 head of mixed, colorful breeds. You will find a good deal of Jersey in there, but also Normande, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Ayrshire, Dutch Belted, and a touch of Holstein. Though these breeds all have different characteristics, they are all usually very curious and gentle. Every one is given a name starting with the same first letter as her mother.
From May through November our cows are intensively rotated through pastures and are are 100% grass fed.
Certified Organic Vegetables
Over the past few years Brookford Farm has consistently grown over 35 acres of certified organic vegetables in Canterbury, NH, available year round. Vegetables move to new fields every year, allowing multiple years between when a crop is planted again in the same location. The advantages often lead to much less pest and disease pressures, healthier plants, longer growing windows for certain crops, and less dependence on biochemical sprays.
